University of Nottingham - Biodiscovery Institute

The Biodiscovery Institute is a world-leading hub of interdisciplinary research excellence that is shaping the future of health and biotechnology.

The £100 million Biodiscovery Institute is home to nearly 1,000 talented academics, researchers, clinicians and other support staff who share a common passion: to use, or support, scientific endeavour to deliver change for the greater good.

The new extension building houses a variety of different research groups and includes different levels of laboratories. It also includes links to Boots Science Building and a link to the remainder of the institute, as well as offices and meeting rooms for all academic and postgraduate staff.

The 65,000 sq ft flexible research centre is housed across five floors and features world-class laboratories and research space for 350 academics, researchers and PHD students, as well as bringing together experts previously located across six university sites.

The new state-of-the art research facility is designed to help identify new breakthroughs in the treatment and diagnosis for serious diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular, liver, bone and respiratory conditions.

GF Tomlinson were appointed by the University as main contractor for this project with BuroFour as project managers supported by Gleeds as cost managers. The architect was Benoy who designed the new extension as well as the two link bridges on the third floor which connect the new building to the existing building and adjacent Boots Science building.

As the sole furniture supplier to the University BOF worked with the client's project team, Benoy, Burofour and Gleeds to ensure the project met all milestones and expectations. We created furniture layouts throughout this pioneering building and provided sample products to allow the project team to ensure the furniture specification fully met the specialist requirements and aspirations of end users and the faculty.

The specification featured seating from Hay, 'Den' booths from Ocee Design, VS 'Panto Move Lupo' stools and Senator 'Mercury' and 'Industrial' lab chairs in addition to many BOF product ranges.

“Our long standing relationship with the BOF team and their knowledge of our furniture requirements in addition to their diverse product portfolio is a huge benefit for our capital projects.”
James Hale, Senior Capital Projects Manager, Estates Office, UoN
