S4C Headquarters - Yr Egin

Canolfan S4C Yr Egin – a new creative and digital centre in Carmarthen recently opened its doors.Based on the University of Wales Trinity Saint David campus in Carmarthen, Yr Egin is a 3,700 square metre building and is home to S4C’s new headquarters as well as a range of companies working in the creative industries, including multi-media publishing and digital technology; digital education; video production and photography; post production; graphic design; translation and sub-titling as well as financial management for the creative industries.

The university launched Yr Egin this autumn and by the end of the year around 100 staff across S4C and other firms from the creative industries, together with Yr Egin’s core team, will be based at the site on the University campus. As the approved furniture supplier to the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, BOF worked with BDP Architects and the project teams at the University and S4C. BDP were asked to ‘provide a fantastic opportunity for academia, industry and the Welsh language community to come together in this rural heartland’.

The design is inspired by the close relationship between the University, S4C and the creative industries. This trinity is reflected in the concept of a simple triangular form. The building is focused around a public foyer and atrium that overarches the three floors. On the ground floor there is a spacious cafe, performance space and auditorium, as well as other resources for the creative community and local groups and societies. A range of offices for S4C and the other partners sit on the two upper floors.

The final scheme included furniture ranges from leading manufacturers such as Hitch Mylius, Boss Design, Frovi and Noor stools from RBM.
