New Year's Resolutions for 2018

Friday, 5 January, 2018

Happy New Year! It’s that time of year where we tend to ask or answer the same questions over and over. “Did you have a nice Christmas break?” (Yes, thanks for asking) and “What are your New Years Resolutions for 2018?”. The second question really got us thinking. We often make resolutions for our personal lives; but never think about changes we can make to our working lives. So, after a lot of reading and speaking to family, friends and colleagues; here are some of our favourite “Business New Years Resolutions for 2018”.

No. 1 - Learn Something New

Learning a new skill, a piece of software or even a language is a great way of stepping out of your comfort zone to generate a new dimension of interest to your life. You could look at learning something that will positively impact your day-to-day work routine, or do the complete opposite and pick up a new skill that benefits your personal life. Either way, starting off 2018 as a beginner; and finishing the year as an expert is an easy way to achieve an added sense of fulfilment throughout the year.

No. 2 - Create a more positive workspace

There are a number of simple steps you can take to creating a working environment that has a positive impact on your staff. Looking at each element of your workspace and making improvements is a sure fire way to create a more productive environment that benefits both your staff and your business.

Looking after the health of your staff is paramount. Ergonomically designed Task Chairs like the Capisco chair from Flokk help with a number of back and joint related issues. Simple ergonomic accessories can make small, positive changes to your work environment. Sit-to-Stand had a huge increase in popularity throughout 2017, and the positive health benefits showed. Check out our Sit-to-Stand working review here.

Lighting plays a key role in workplace productivity. Changing the layout of your workspace to work with natural light is key, however; if an abundance of natural light isn’t available introducing desk lights such as Horizon are a simple way to improve the lighting in your office.

Bringing the outdoors-in was a hot topic in 2017, and doesn’t look like it’s going to slow down any time soon. Incorporating elements of nature into your office can help focus your staffs’ minds, reduce mental stress and illness while increasing productivity. A few simple ways to do this are bringing potted plants into your workspace. Investing in products that facilitate the incorporation of nature, like the On-Point table or Green Islands from Offecct. Or even forcing the appearance of the outdoors by using nature inspired wall coverings and graphics.

Gone are the days of individual offices and fixed booth workstations. Throughout business all over the world, individuals and departments work closer together to achieve common goals. Why not think about introducing collaborate work and meeting spaces to your environment to boost positivity and productivity?

No. 3 - Keep a Journal / Diary

Dear Diary…. This year I’d like to be more organised and productive in work.

Keeping a journal or diary is a great way of improving your organisation and keeping all your tasks and ideas in one place. Some of the world’s most successful people and high achievers use unique diary’s to focus on areas of improvement, set goals and tasks and even reflect on positive experiences and setbacks.

So pick up your diary and make sure you keep it up to date! If you’re looking for a unique way of organising your work life and setting goals, check out this video on bullet journaling…

No. 4 - Improve your work Life Balance

This is easier said than done; but I’m sure this is the top priority on a lot of people’s New Years Resolutions. To start your 2018 feeling more balanced, try to take more control of your time. Make sure you make time to do the things you love, make time for family and friends and most importantly, set aside some time for you to relax. Creating a healthier, more positive personal life is the best way to increase the positivity and productivity of your work life.

No. 5 - Start Blogging.

Blogging has a great impact on your business. Establishing yourself as a thought leader in your chosen field whilst also boosting your website’s SEO. You’ll find a number of pro-blog articles on leading marketing websites. However, blogging is also a fun, engaging experience. It connects you with like minded people and gives a great sense of achievement and satisfaction upon completion. Pick your chosen field, decide on some topics and get writing!
