My First Week at BOF

Wednesday, 25 April, 2018

We'd like to give a warm welcome to our newest member of the Design Department, Trudi Lloyd-Jones who is joining us as a Junior Designer. Trudi explains some of the things she's been doing in her first week at BOF...

My first day at BOF began with the ‘Big BOF Tour’- a walk around the office to meet all the team. After a brief chat with all my new colleagues and sharing a little bit about myself, I then spent the remainder of my week trying (but failing) to remember everyone’s names. I had time to do my first tea round before my introduction to Revit began.

My first design task was for one of BOF’s most prestigious clients and involved selecting feature wallpaper to co-ordinate with existing wall finishes in a Library area. I was introduced to ‘Tektura Wallcoverings’ and spent some time familiarising myself with their collections before ordering my favourites to be presented on a Finishes Board, created by our Graphic Designers. Continuing work on the Library, I met with the area representative from Interface, alongside our Project Designer Claire, to find acoustic carpet solutions. This was also the perfect time to preview their latest collection called ‘Human Space’ which focuses on Biophilic Design - a popular workplace trend for 2018.

Throughout the week I’ve also spent time training in Revit, the industry standard BIM compliant modelling software for architects and designers. From learning to draw basic architecture, to importing families, editing finishes and collating product schedules - by day three I found myself submitting my first designs. Of course, I couldn’t have done it without asking a question or ten.

By midweek it was time for some product training with our Showroom Manager, Rhian. She explained some of the features of the products we supply, such as the integrated power access points in the James Burleigh benching. It will be useful to know how these design features can be planned into projects to meet a client’s brief.

To end my first week at BOF, Claire and I took a short trip to Bridgend College to survey a space for an upcoming project. I’m looking forward to seeing the first project I’ve been involved with, come to life during the installation over the next couple of months.
