University of Surrey - George Edwards Library

The Library comprises of 3 physical sections: the original George Edwards building, the 1980 Mullens extension and the 2011 Learning Centre extension. Stock is currently dispersed over 3 floors of the Library. The recent refurbishment project focussed on Levels 4 and 5 of the George Edwards section of the building and on Levels 2, 4 and 5 of the Mullens section.

“The library improvements have created 120 additional spaces for this academic year. Individual carrels on Level 5 all have their own task lights and provide really effective space for more concentrated study.

On Level 4 there is now a range of lovely new collaborative spaces and furniture. Study pods with individual lights are proving particularly popular with students.

There are also four new bookable group study booths up on Level 4 as well, all with fully integrated AV and stylish new glass ‘white’ boards.”

Phase 2 is planned for next summer for further areas of levels 4 and 5. The University is gathering student feedback to ensure further improvements fulfill study requirements and current trends.

To achieve the initial brief from the client we specified products such as Workbays, Joyn benching and Soft Shell chairs from Vitra and Noor Up stools from RBM. Other areas in the library feature our own Symphony benching, Magic Stools from Boss Design and Baudot Strings from Allermuir which offer acoustic properties to reduce noise around group study areas.
