University of-Surrey - George Edwards Library (Phase 2)

The University of Surrey have invested £5.5 million in the George Edwards Library over the last three years. The Library comprises of 3 physical sections: the original George Edwards building, the 1980 Mullens extension and the 2011 Learning Centre extension.

In 2017 we refurbished Levels 4 and 5 of the George Edwards section of the building and Levels 2, 4 and 5 of the Mullens section. This year we furnished levels 1, 3, 4 and 5.

As well as 160 additional seats this summer and 130 additional in summer 2017, over 600 study spaces have been replaced and upgraded to create spaces we hope will inspire and motivate.

The University have rehoused all printed materials in new, modern shelving units which has helped create lighter, brighter access to collections and released floor space.

New study spaces have been designed with student feedback firmly in mind and this has influenced everything from lighting and power features to chair design.

HNW Architects worked closely with the client to offer vibrant yet comfortable places to study for current and future students, dedicating spaces to individual and group study and creating break-out zones with ‘away from the desk’ areas. A Flexible Training Room is a key focus on Level 1. Designed as a flexible, divideable space for up to 60 people it will greatly enhance the Library’s ability to provide training and development activities to both students and staff in the University.

Alongside training and independent study spaces, Level 1 also includes consultation spaces in which academic skills staff can engage and collaborate with students in a variety of ways.

Simon Narbeth, BOF's Design & Project Manager commented, "Our collaborative engagement with key stakeholders of the Library and HNW Architects, has enabled us to develop a functional and creative environment, for returning and prospective students alike.

We enhanced the current function of the Library, by creating further dedicated spaces for individual and group study, as well as semi-private work areas for student and staff consultations.

It has been a pleasure working with the team at the University of Surrey and HNW Architects. We hope the students enjoy the space as much as we have creating it."

We have been very fortunate in being able to work with bof over the past two years to realise our ambitions for the refurbishment. The range and quality of products, and the expert advice available to us, have enabled us to create attractive and inspirational spaces that have been really welcomed by our students and that positively meet the requirements of the University’s approach to teaching and learning and to the provision of a high quality student experience. It has been a pleasure working with bof and we have been particularly grateful for the responsive and flexible approach that we have experienced."
