University of Southampton - Centre for Cancer Immunology

Following successful fund raising, the University of Southampton built the new Centre for Cancer Immunology (CCI) in conjunction with Southampton General Hospital. The new 4000m² centre is located on the General Hospital site and is home to world class research facilities.

The new centre, the first of its kind in the UK, further improves the University’s global reputation for ground-breaking research in this area, enabling it to accelerate the development of immunotherapy treatments and deliver cures for cancer more effectively and quickly.

The University launched a campaign to raise £25m fund for the construction of a new cancer immunology centre in 2015.

The upper two floors of the building have space dedicated for researchers and administration, while the lower two floors house laboratories. The ground floor of the building includes an impressive atrium, along with space for meeting rooms and the clinical trials unit, with an open plan and dedicated office space.

The first floor includes an open-plan work space, in addition to interdisciplinary breakout areas. It also includes space for meeting rooms for researchers, PhD and undergraduate students, senior academics, and clinicians in cancer immunology.

Scientists moved into the state-of-the-art Centre in March and Centre Director, Professor Tim Elliot commented:

“we are thrilled to have reached the 25m target for our new Centre of Cancer Immunology and are eternally grateful to everyone who has contributed,” he said. “The efforts that people have gone to have been truly inspiring, we cannot thank you enough. The university has made major advances in tumour immunology and immunotherapy research and we strongly believe the new centre will go a long way in discovering new treatments”

The second floor of the building is a hub for laboratory research. It has space dedicated for study and work areas for students and staff.

As their approved furniture supplier BOF’s Project Team have worked closely with the University, Rekan and main contractor Kier since 2016 to develop the project. We also worked with Lauren Thompson at Devereux Architecture on the furniture specification who planned the furniture layouts and chose the interior/furniture finishes.

The installation was completed early 2018. We provided desking, seating and storage from our 'Harmony Collection' throughout this state of the art building and are proud to be involved with such a prestigious project.
